Settlers provoke Palestinian villagers near Ramallah

RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Hundreds of Israel's extremist settlers gathered near the central West Bank village of An-Nabi Salih in the Ramallah district Saturday, locals told Ma'an, sparking unrest.

Residents said young Palestinian men set fire to used tires at the village entrance fearing settlers might storm the village, while Israeli forces deployed in the area to intervene in case clashes were provoked, locals said.

In Hebron, residents reported being intimidated by dozens of settlers, who set off fireworks near the city's Ibrahimi Mosque and marched through Palestinian neighborhoods in the southern West Bank city.

Israeli authorities partitioned the mosque in 1994 after Israeli settler Baruch Goldstein shot dead 29 Palestinians and wounded over 100 others during the dawn prayer.

The Israeli Education Minister recently called for a new program to bring Israeli school children to the site, which is also holy for Jews.

Hebron residents said the intensified settler activity at the mosque was a response to the minister's call, which they feared was an attempt to "Judaize" the area.

Rise in settler violence

A noticeable rise in settler attacks across the West Bank has led to fears of night raids by armed settlers in Palestinian villages.

Analysts have expressed concerns that settlers plan to provoke a reaction from Palestinians which Israeli authorities could use to foil the Palestinian Authority's efforts to control security in the West Bank.

An Israeli government decision to take down Monday structures in the illegal settlement outpost Havad Gilad near Nablus in the northern West Bank led to the most recent spike in violence perpetrated by settlers against Palestinians.

Following the razing of the outpost buildings, settlers firebombed a Palestinian home, blocked roads, smashed shops and damaged Palestinian cars in line with their "price-tag policy" to make Palestinians pay for perceived anti-settler actions by the Israeli government.

One Havad Gilad resident told AFP settlers may enter Palestinian villages to throw out the residents in protest.

Settlers organized a "day of rage" Thursday, rallying in Israel and the West Bank and threatening further "price tag" attacks.

On Monday, Palestinian Authority settlement affairs official Ghassan Doughlas said a warning had been issued to Palestinians to avoid areas where settlers gather for their own safety.

Details Questionable Roles of Liz Cheney, Shaha Riza, and Others in Multi-Million Dollar Program

(Washington, D.C.) – A report released by the Government Accountability Project (GAP), based on documents obtained through nearly three years’ of U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, exposes the highly irregular manner in which the Foundation for the Future (FFF) – an obscure project funded by the U.S. Department of State – was established and operated by Bush administration officials and appointees.

The report, which is based on 267 documents released by the Department of State over a period of 33 months, can be found here: (Full Report) (Executive Summary) (Key FOIA documents) (Appendix I)

Background

The Foundation for the Future first became an issue of public interest inquiry in 2007, when GAP published the payroll records of Riza, girlfriend of then-World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz. The records showed that Riza, a British national who worked as a World Bank communications officer, was seconded to the U.S. State Department after Wolfowitz was appointed, where she was responsible for establishing the Foundation for the Future (FFF). The FFF was a nonprofit organization tasked with promoting democracy and reform in the Broader Middle East and North Africa (BMENA) region.

While seconded from the Bank to the State Department in 2005 and 2006, Riza received salary raises in excess of what Bank rules allowed, earning far more than Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. In October 2006, Riza’s secondment was transferred to the FFF itself, where she remained until returning to the Bank in early 2008, after Wolfowitz was forced to resign.

“The Foundation for the Future was to promote democracy, transparency and popular political participation on a multilateral basis in the Middle East,” said GAP International Program Director Bea Edwards. “So when Liz Cheney – who, in the view of many Middle Eastern leaders, occupied her position largely because she was the Vice President’s daughter – asked other nations for contributions, they balked. Add to this the fact that the Foundation’s board member selection process was directed by the former Deputy Secretary of Defense’s girlfriend and that the Foundation was managed by a personal friend of Wolfowitz’s with little expertise in the region, and it’s no wonder that many potential donors refused to fund it.”

Ternyata Jangkaan saya Meleset.

Beberapa orang aktivis Mesir memakai baju Otpor ketika revolusi menjatuhkan Hosni Mubarak.
Menurut Thierry Meyssan (Presiden Voltaire Network) dalam artikel bertajuk "NED: National Endowment for Democracy-The networks of "democratic" interference" pada 7 Oktober 2008. (baca sini).

Brotherhood changes English website to appear moderate

By STEVEN EMERSON

03/02/2011 05:16

It’s not clear why the bylaws disappeared, but the timing is highly suspicious, they vanished within days of Mubarak's ouster.

The Muslim Brotherhood seems to be trying to preserve its recently burnished
image as a moderate party dedicated to maintaining a modern, secular and just
Egypt.

In keeping with this apparent internal strategy, the Brotherhood
has removed its explicitly worded bylaws from its English-language
website. The bylaws are still available via an archived version of the
Web page. The bylaws have long been a source of discussion and debate on the
Internet
because of the group’s stated intention to create an Islamic state,
uniting Muslims around the world, while “building a new basis of human
civilization.”

RELATED:

The Region: Egypt gets its Khomeini
A portrait of Muslim Brotherhood's supreme authority

Selected sections read as follows: “E – The need to work
on establishing the Islamic State, which seeks to effectively implement the
provisions of Islam and its teachings.

“Defend the nation against the
internal enemies, try to present the true teachings of Islam and communicate its
ideas to the world.

“G – The sincere support for a global cooperation in
accordance with the provisions of the Islamic Sharia, which would safeguard the
personal rights, freedom of speech for active and constructive participation
towards building a new basis of human civilization as is ensured by the overall
teachings of Islam.”

The group’s bold and unambiguous calls for
re-establishing the Islamic Khalifa have startled many, and have fueled distrust
as to its true intentions, despite its current public face.

It’s not
clear why the bylaws disappeared, but the timing is highly suspicious. In
January 2010, it was reported that the Brotherhood was considering amending
them. No change appears to have been made in the last year. But now, with a
genuine opportunity to appear on an Egyptian ballot, they vanished from public
view within days of president Hosni Mubarak’s ouster.

On the group’s
Arabic-language site, however, the bylaws remain posted. Press reports of
the Brotherhood’s role during the uprising depict a group committed to
presenting its most appealing side for the world to see. While the
organization is not a monolith, its old guard remains entrenched in
power. And those voices still advocate the Islamification of
society.

For example, in a sermon last September, General Guide Mohamed
Badie said Muslims are duty-bound to make the Koran the law of
Egypt.

Likewise, another senior member, Kamal Helbawy, told an Iranian
news agency on Sunday that the Islamic Republic deserved credit for fostering
Islamic unity. Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a role model for Muslims, he said,
“the bravest man in the Muslim world.”

In an episode of PBS’s Frontline
series this week, a young Brotherhood leader is seen advising an enthusiastic
fellow Brother participating in the protests to put away the Koran he was
holding up, and to tone down his religious rhetoric: “Don’t hold up the Koran,”
the Brotherhood leader said. “We should be holding up Egyptian flags.
Open it…but not for the media.”

This theme was echoed in a January 31
story appearing in the Los Angeles Times, where two Brotherhood members had the
following exchange: “‘The fear is broken,’ yelled Bahaa Mohammed. ‘We want
freedom.’

‘And Islam,’ said his friend. ‘We need Islam.’

‘Yes,’ said
Mohammed, hushing the young man. ‘But first freedom and the will of the
people.’”

It’s not the first time Brotherhood members acknowledged the need to
conceal the group’s overall agenda with a more benign face. Speaking privately,
but under FBI surveillance, activists in the American branch of the Muslim
Brotherhood discussed the need to invoke deception in the wake of US-brokered
peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians in 1993.

The problem with
the Oslo Accords was not in its details, members of the Brotherhood’s Palestine
Committee agreed during a weekend-long gathering in Philadelphia. Rather,
the deal empowered the secular Fatah movement at the expense of the Islamist
Hamas, a Brotherhood offshoot. And the deal led to the acceptance of
Israel, which the group opposed.

The problem, they agreed, was that they
couldn’t just come out and say so.
Then-Holy Land Foundation President
Shukri Abu Baker tells Council on American- Islamic Relations cofounder Omar
Ahmad: “War is deception. We are fighting our enemy with a kind heart and we
never thought of deceiving it. War is deception. Deceive, camouflage,
pretend that you’re leaving while you’re walking that way… Deceive your
enemy.”

Ahmad, in response to another speaker’s question, says, “We’ve
always demanded the 1948 territories” before there was an Israel.

“Yes,”
the speaker replies. “But we don’t say that publicly. You cannot
say that publicly, in front of the Americans.”

“No,” says Ahmad, “We
didn’t say that to the Americans.”
