Ministry Strives To Improve Bus Services In Klang Valley

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- The Transport Ministry will push ahead this year with the effort to improve public transportation especially bus services in the Klang Valley, its minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said.

He admitted that the target for the urban public transport sector, one of the key areas in the National Key Results Area (NKRA), had not been fully realised last year, with the load factor of 800 buses, each with a capacity of 50 to 60 passengers, reaching only 43 per cent compared to the target of 50 per cent.

"Some of the factors are beyond the ministry's control," he told reporters after attending the ministry's monthly assembly, here.

He said that irregular bus arrivals due to traffic congestion had affected trip schedules and this had somewhat eroded public confidence in the service.

Several improvements would be made this year, he said, with bus service operators adding 400 more buses to improve trip frequencies.

He added that the ministry targeted to achieve a load factor of 56 per cent this year.

He also said that more car parking areas in public transportation stations would be provided this year.

The ministry at the moment was evaluating tender submissions for the construction of parking areas in stations such as in Kajang, Serdang, Sungai Besi and Bandar Tasek Selatan, he added.

Overall, he said, there was an increase in the usage of bus and rail services, from 12 per cent in 2008 to 17 per cent last year.
